Previous studies reported that low methionine diet, which was used for the treatment of homocystinuria with cystathionine-β-synthase deficiency, could reduce cystathionine-β-synthase activity and increase urinary formiminoglutamate excretion in the rat. But the mechanism of the effect is still uncertain. Since it is necessary to maintain the residual enzyme activity as much as possible even under the treatment, it is important to unravel the regulation mechanism of those enzyme activities for the establishment of better diet therapy. Accoding to these considerations, animal experiments were cariied out to see the effects of depressed methionine resynthesis on methionine and folate metabolism. The results of experiments clearly indicated that not only dietary methionine deficiency but also the depression of methionine resynthesis suppressed cystathionine-β-synthase activity as well as the folate dependent remethylation of homocysteine.
