Activities of the classical complement (CH50) and alternative complement pathways (AP50), and complement components (C1q, C1_<INH>, C4, C3a, C3c, C3_<ACT>, β1H, C5, C9) were measured in 94 patients with sarcoidosis. The following results were obtaind: 1) The levels of CH50 and AP50 in patients with active sarcoidosis were higher than those normal controls. 2) The levels of CH50 was dominated more by disease activity than that of AP50. 3) C4, C3c and β1H in patients with active sarcoidosis were higher than in normal controls. 4) There was no significant changes in the complement systems of patients with inactive sarcoidosis. 5) There was no significant correlations between complement systems and circulating immune complexes (CIC). 6) Patients who received corticosteroid therapy showed normal complement activity. 7) It seems that the complement system of sarcoidosis is correlated to disease activity.
