The covering effect on fresh burn lesion and donor site wounds made after skin graft dissection was examined with lyophilized porcine dermal skin (LPDS) in comparison with lyophilized porcine skin (LPS). LPDS, thin and highly adhesive, produced markedly favorable results for superficial dermal burns, but not always for deep dermal burns, because in the latter case the melting of LPDS was conspicuous. There was no significant difference in the overall period for healing and in the degree of scar formation. However, LPDS was easily softened for 1-2 min with physiological saline, whereas LPS took more than 30 min. In addition, since LPDS was much more permeable than LPS, exudate from the wound was easily excreted and the risk of infection was very low.
