Various retail formats have appeared gradually in advanced nations for the last 150 years since the first department store "Le Bon Marche" was opened in Paris in 1852. However, these retail formats have appeared almost simultaneously in only the last ten years or more in China, and the retail companies that adopt the chain store management method have grown rapidly in China. This paper discusses the mechanism of development of these Chinese chain companies in such a special environment through analyzing the change of the company market positions, the change of the scale structure, and the change of the format structure of these companies.
