He was a pediatrician and in the mid-1980s he had an extensive supervisory experience with Melanie Klein. He was known as an original thinker and had an extraordinary unique imagination. Winnicott took the developmental theory back into the earliest infancy, the period of life from conception to three years of age, therefore his work was devoted to the verbal exploration of what is pre-verbal in the history of the individual. The work of Winnicott provided the balancing force in object relations theory which emphasizes the environmental context and the real qualities of the maternal object, and his concepts were related well to ego psychology and self psychology. Winnicott concerned himself with issues of dyadic interaction, that is infant-mother relationship, and was always aware of the contexts of the facilitating environment and the culture. But it was his consistent perspective on stages of development that the neonate's experience was global and undifferentiated. Nowadays his influence has gained steadily and his imagination contributes to the theory and practice of psychoanalysis and other studies.
