We often project various concepts on spatial locations and use various spatial expressions of concept structure in many research areas. As seen from these facts, meaning and space closely relate to each other. It is therefore supposed that what space means to us will influence the representation of that space. In order to discuss these issues, researches on mental representation of space are reviewed. One line of researches, which are from human geography and environmental psychology, use subjects' drawings of areas ('mental map') as their image of them. Other studies, which are from experimental psychology, focus on the spatial knowledge representation. Theoretical and methodological problems in these studies are discussed, and it is concluded that experiments should be so designed as in natural settings (including stimuli, tasks, and measures) in order to study the relation between the representation of space and its meaning.
