• 守屋謙二先生古稀記念論文集I had the chance of scanning our artistic development in the Meiji era at the Exhibition of Meiji Art which was held in Tokyo National Museum in 1968. It seems characteristic of us that introduction of things Western is so impetuous and obvious in the process of modernization. In this short essay, I should like to try to trace this quickly and constantly changing process of Meiji art, in its concrete forms, in connection with the social background of that age.
