A method for visualizing qualitative temperature distributions around hypersonic vehicles has been developed. The idea of this method is as follows: When an electric discharge is generated in the flowfield where a temperature distribution exists, not only a radiation intensity, but also a radiation spectrum differs according to the gas temperature. Therefore, the temperature distribution is obtainable by taking a color photograph of the electric discharge. As a example of this method, a temperature layer over a slightly blunted wedge is demonstrated.
