Although HID lamps have the merits, such as high brightness, high efficiency and long life, otherwise, have a demerit that the response time in starting or restarting is longer, because of the high temperature and the high pressure of arc tube plasma. In the paper, by means of the simulation model of high pressure mercury lamps, we have studied on the effects of variable initial additional-inputs to the response time. The obtained results are as follows. (1) It is confirmed that the initial raise of additional-input voltage to lamps is very effective to shortenning the starting time. (2) It is clarified by the simulation method, that the fast and smooth response is possible to be given, with the reasonable control of the initial additional-input voltage.
