There are many investigations for the inverse problems in which unknown data on material properties or boundary shapes of the system under consideration should be estimated by using measured data. The author and his co-workers have been working on such inverse problems; A method of inverse analysis is proposed which combines the boundary element method and the filter theories; This method is applied to a variety of the inverse problems, and its usefulness is demonstrated through numerical computations. This article reports inverse analyses using the boundary element method and the extended Kalman filter or the projection filter theory. Emphasis is placed on applications to certain types of inverse heat conduction problems in homogeneous, isotropic media, and the inverse problems of boundary shape identification and temperature control are discussed.
