This paper describes measures of risk management, or supply reliability management, generally applied by electric power utilities in Japan, which are: (1) introducing oil alternatives, such as nuclear, coal and LNG resources, to assure energy security, (2) balancing supply and demand by accurate load forecasting, adequate reserve margin, automatic frequency control system and so on, (3) maintaining standard supply voltage by automatic voltage regulators, reactive power suppliers and so on, (4) adequate redundancy of transmission facilities and (5) protective relaying system. This paper also presents outline of reliability analyses based on probabilistic or other mathematical methods to support more rational power system planning.
