Understanding the dynamic behavior of ships in waves is essential not only for the design of hull structures but also those of equipments and fittings regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations agency with jurisdiction over the safety of international shipping and protecting the marine environment. Equipment such as Emergency Towing Arrangements (ETA), towing and mooring equipment, doorways and ventilators, hatch covers, miscellaneous openings on the freeboard and superstructure decks, windows and skylights are all affected by the dynamic behaviors of ships in waves. This article reviews a number of papers by the author on the dynamic tension of towlines and the motion responses of various ships in short crested irregular waves to better understand and discuss design criteria for ship outfitting.
