In investigating marine diesel engine failures, it is of the utmost importance to develop an objective standard to determine what kinds of fuel oil are the root cause of combustion failures As a 3^<rd> party independent body and with the cooperation of Japanese shipowners, the ClassNK research foundation has obtained a large amount of marine heavy fuel oil for analysis, including a large number of samples that shipowners determined to be the source of combustion failures (herein referred to as problem data), In total, some 350 samples have been analyzed through FIA combustion, including 130 recent samples of marine heavy oil, allowing analysis from a variety of angles. Thanks to the assistance of the Japan Marine Equipment Association's Committee on Low Grade Bunker Fuel, samples of pure non-circulated FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) purified LCO (Light Cycle Oil), CLO (Clarified Oil), FCC Slurry, and RFCC, among others, have been obtained, providing a valuable opportunity to conduct additional analyses. The combustion characteristics (ignition delay, combustion period, maximum combustion pressure, and rate of maximum heat release) are affected by many factors, including density, kinetic viscosity, carbon residue, asphaltene content, aromaticity, carbon/hydrogen (C/H) ration, paraffin carbon content and others. Each of these conditions, in turn, was also studied in turn and a variety of conclusions have been reached.
