The Genetic Algorithm, called as GA, is used to have a optimum design of ship structure incorporating not only the static constraints but also dynamic constraints. Several techniques are proposed to take count of dynamic effect into the optimum design of ship structure. The most essential technique is keeping the natural frequency away the exciting frequency by applying the inequality constraint condition. Generalized design variables are introduced in order to transfer not only the dynamic but also the static equilibrium equations into the equality constraints, resulting in the optimal structural design without solving these equilibrium equations at all. The magnitudes of acceleration and displacement are constrained instead of applying the natural frequency constraint condition. There are several unknown factors in real design problems. The fuzzy theory is applied in GA for handing the uncertainty of constraint conditions. Two ways of solving the fuzzy optimization are investigated to obtain fuzzy solution and crisp solution.
