We treat an estimation method of hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a ship in manoeuvring motion as a lifting potential flow problem in this paper. First, we show exact formulae of hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a body from which a free vortex layer is flowing out. After that, we make clear theoretical accuracy of approximate solutions of hydrodynamic force and moment in a slender body theory by deducing these approximate formulae from above exact formulae. Next, we show practical composition of velocity potential appropriate for ship manoeuvring motion. This composition of velocity potential is consistent with above approximate formulae of hydrodynamic force and moment in accuracy. Lastly, we show validity of these formulae by comparison between calculation results and experimental results in deep and shallow water.
