In dealing with structures of complex configurations such as ship structures, generation of finite element model is one of a major bottleneck. In ship structural design, a lot of finite element analyses must be carried out, and these analyses are not only for one kind of geometry but also for many kinds of analysis levels. For example, whole ship analyses with shell elements are carried out in early design stages, and analyses of welding part with solid element are done for detailed design stages. To overcome this ploblem, an object oriented finite element modeling system, MODIFY, is developed by the authors. In this paper, the concept of the finite element modeling system and the technique for the construction of the system are introduced. The paper describes three subjects. First, the Part Object concept and the object oriented data structures of the system to realize the effective design and analysis process is introduced. Second, mesh generation algorithm of 3D shell structures, that is suitable for ship structural analysis, is indicated. Thirdly, an application of the concept to the automatic finite element model generation for different analysis levels is described. Several examples of a finite element model generated by the system are shown to represent the availability of this system.
