• One of the most desirable items for marine propulsion machinery under long-lasting economic uncertainty is the improvement of operating economy. In this paper, conversion of main engine has been taken up and the on-going sitution around the deal of main engine conversion has been outlined with its effects discussed. The next item is that marine propulsion machinery must have sufficient reliability. Discussions have been made on the relatively new topics such as the vibration problem occuring on the latest diesel engines with fewer number of cylinders, measures against vibration of highly elasticity couplings used in medium speed diesel engines, machinery damages due to the use of low grade fuel oil and suggested measures. And the necessity of careful consideration at the stage of design and maintenance precautions have also been discussed.
