The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the early diagnosis and prognosis of infants with brain damage, using VER and AER.VER and AER were recorded in the children of control group which were composed of febrile convulsions, epilepsies, other neurological disorders and premature and full-term babies without any CNS damage. Peak P_2 latencies of the subjects with severe perinatal troubles and Down's syndrome were compared with the average value in the control group. The results were shown as follows : (1) The peak P_2 latencies of VER and AER in the control group decreased with increasing age, especially within 2 months of age in VER. (2) The absences of VER and AER involved the follow-up observations were poor prognosis ; died in two cases and showed psychomotor retardation in one case. (3) Abnormally later peak P_2 latencies and high amplitude among the peaks after peak P_2 was observed in two cases of Down's syndrome. (4) Normal shapes of VER and AER were observed in one case of normally developed familial neonatal convulsion of unknown etiology, however he had slightly later peak P_2 latency of VER. These results suggest that these methods seem to be useful indexes to judge the prognosis of the newborns and infancies with brain damage.
