Of all Taciteae Quaestiones one of the most vexed is the dating of the Dialogues. It is generally believed that Tacitus wrote nothing under Domitianus. The opinion could only be supported by the famous 'per silentium' passage (Agr. 3). But the sentence is framed so rhetorically that we cannot think it imply the historical truth. Considered from various angles, it looks as though the Dialogues were composed between 89 and 93, that is, while he was serving as legatus in a province.
