The main purpose of this article is to clarify why Shaker furniture is regarded as an early achievement of "functionalism" even though it was a craft of the nineteenth century. Thus, this article focuses on two historical events: the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876 and the technical development of furniture production. With respect to the exhibition, this article analyzes the industrial activities of the Shaker community prior to the exhibition and the heightened social interest in Shaker furniture, which won the Shaker award. Regarding technical development, this article analyzes the weight saving and strengthening in the production of chairs and stands, and highlights the exhibition of Shaker furniture as the declaration of these achievements.
