This study deals with the problem of cinema education. While previous studies have focused on the area of school education, the present study reveals the essence of the cinema education movement, which also attempted to improve the position of cinema. In 1928, Mizuno Shinko, head of the Motion Picture Department of the Osaka Mainichi Newspaper, applied the term "educational film (Katsuei)" to films with an educational purpose. He intended to improve the perception of "cinema (eiga)" as low-class entertainment by comparing it to "print (Katsuji)". I also discuss his dream that Katsuei will take the place of print culture.
