The immunoglobulin IgA, IgG and IgM have been determined by use of the single radial immunodiffusion method in 36 patients with alcoholic liver damage, 44 patients with nonalcoholic liver damage and 15 normal healthy controls. As a rule, patients with alcoholic liver damage showed abnormal immunoglnbulin level, which correlated to histopathological changes. Cirrhotic type of alcoholic liver damage, showed higher level of every immunogloblin, especially IgA and IgG than another type of alcoholic liver damage, and active type with necrotic change clearly showed higher level of IgA than inactive type. Active alcoholic liver damage showed higher level of IgA than chronic viral hepatisis. However there is no statistical significant difference of IgA between active alcoholic liver damage and chronic active hepatitis or cryptogenic liver cirrosis. These results suggest that IgA increases in liver damage with necrotic change, bearing no relation to alcoholic liver damage.
