Pallor of the disc is not uncommon in excessive myopia. Though pallor alone is a poor indication of the presence of optic atrophy, the stretching and thinning of the choroid may well cause the degenerative change in the retina, and in consequence affect the optic nerve. That is to say, a true optic atrophy due to ascending degeneration. Apart from this ascending degeneration, the continued elongation of the globe itself may affect the optic nerve, though the ultimate cause is unknown. Anyway, there may be some amount of a true optic atrophy in high myopia. But we don't have much proof of it. Complications of excessive myopia, such as myopic crescent, posterior staphyloma and macular degenerative changes have been fully discussed, but little have been mentioned about pallor of the disc, clinically nor histopathologically. As far as we know, Walsh touched upon the possibility of the exsistence of optic atrophy in excessive myopia. In diagnosis of optic atrophy, testing of vision and visual field examination provide valuable evidence in addition to ophthalmoscopy. But these findings are sometimes unreliable in patients of highly subnormal vision. So, making use of ERG and VER which are considered objective tools in the investigation of the visual system, we tried to make clear the true nature of pallor of the disc in high myopia. This is a preliminary report of the study.
