A histopathological study of acute gastroduodenal peptic ulcer is presented. In this study the mode of development of the gastroduodenal peptic ulcer was ascertained and the significance of the intramural hemorrhagic foci in the muscularis mucosae as well as in the submucosa for the pathogenesis of the ulceration was discussed. The intramural hemorrhagic foci in the muscularis mucosae and submucosa destruct the overlying mucosa and adjacent tissue. Such a focus, a locus minoris resistentiae is digested by gastric juice, and the initial hemorrhagic foci become opened hemorrhagic necrotizing foci surrounded by areas of swelling necrosis, which are nothing but acute peptic ulcers. It is suggested from the histopathologic study that the occurence of the intramural hemorrhagic foci is possibly related to the coexistent allergic-hyperergic gastritis.
