To investigate the prognosis of neurosis I sent enquete to the neurotic outpatients who visited the policlinic of Chiba University Hospital from 1962 to 1965. 415 patients of them gave answer to the enquete. They are the subjects of this study. I classified them into two groups : (Group I) 355 patients who received only drug therapy, (Group II) 60 patients who received psychotherapy and drugs. I compared the answers of each group, and did a comparative study on the prognosis of the two groups of neurotic outpatients. The results were as follows : 1) The patients of Group II said the results of the therapy more effective than the others : 54% of Group I , 73% of Group II answered well regarding their present states. 2) The evaluations of therapists and patients about the results of the psychotherapy was fairly correlative. 3) The comments mentioned spontaneously in the questionnaire were as follows : the patients who received psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy told chiefly about the personal insight, the patients who received brief psychotherapy told about the doctor-patients relationship and the patients who received only drug therapy hoped for more consideration for the patients. 4) From these results, I think that the prognosis of psychoneurosis is influenced by the depth of communication between therapists and patients, i. e. in the Group I , through superficial doctor-patients relationship, the alleviation of anxiety and disappearance of symptoms may be brought about; in brief psychotherapy group, through relatively profound communication, self-recognition, dissolution of anxiety and emotional stability may be gained : in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy groups, therapeutic insight, efforts to adapt themselves to environments, reintegration of personality and psychosocial independency may be obtained. I think the process as I described above, is the most essential problem when discussing the prognosis of psychoneurosis.
