It was observed that rabbits become extremely susceptible to hypercalcemia after adrenalectomy which was induced by intravenous infusion of CaCl2 solution. Thereby, pronounced arterial hypotenstion accompanied by cyanosis and generalized parasympathetic tuning was characteristic. Death followed in this state with relatively mild hypercalcemia which can not influence the cardiac function directly. Autopsy findings was similar to that observed in anaphylaxis in this animal species, i.e. pronounced dilatation of right heart indicating pulmonary arterial spasm. Intracisternal administration of small amounts of CaCl_2 solution was found to induce a shock of quite similar type both in intact and adrenalectomized rabbits. Effectiveness of vagotomy in preventing the shock thus induced suggested that the shock was due to the activation of pulmonary vagal vasoconstrictors. In case of intravenous infusion of CaCl2 solution examination of the cerebrospinal fluid showed marked elevation of calcium ion concentration in case of adrenalectomized rabbits, but not in intact animals. This enhanced permeability of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier in adrenalectomized animals was found to be specific for calcium ions and could be reversed by pretreatment with glucocorticoids. Thus the brakdown of blood-cerebrespinal fluid barrier for calcium ions and together with the observed increase in susceptibility of the central nervous system to the intracisternal injection of CaCl_2 solution would explain the enhanced susceptibility of adrenalectomized rabbits to hypercalcemia.
