• Histological and electron microscopic studies were performed on the lymph node responses following antigenic stimulation in rabbits. Rabbits received single or repeated injection of bovine serum albumin (BSA), into the left hind foot pad. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Early after single injection of 100mg BSA, it was found that there was in the regional popliteal lymph node hyperplastic reaction of the lymphatic tissue accompanied by formation of nodules with their centers and by plasma cellular prolifelation following serum exudation, granulocytic infiltration and macrophagocytic reaction. This reaction was remarkably observed in the lymph node at 10 experimental days and then gradually regressed over a period of 30 days. When rabbits received repeated injection (50 mg BSA, once a week), there was more exaggerated proliferation of the cells of the lymphocytic or plasmocytic ceries than that following single injection. Aforementioned hyperplastic reactions revealed here continued until around 80 experimental days and then subsided, being accompanied by increase of reticulum cells over a period of 100 experimental days. In the latter stage there took place also atrophy, fibrillosis and fibrosis in the lymphatic tissue. While these changes were pronouncedly demonstrated in the regional popliteal lymph node, reactions in remote lymph nodes, as well as in antibody-forming organs like the spleen and bone marrow, were in general mild throughout the experimental course.
