Histopathological studies were performed on the tissue responses following prolonged sensitization via intravenous administration of antigen in adult rabbits. Seven rabbits received daily injection of 5mg of egg albumin (EA) for 64-73 days and later of 50mg of EA for 1-175 days, respectively (group I). Other three rabbits were injected daily with 50mg of EA from the beginning (group II). The results obtained here are summarized as follows : 1) In rabbits of group I, there were found in antibody-forming organs such as the spleen, lymph nodes, etc. hyperplastic reactions with a marked proliferation of plasma cells, that is, development of systemic immune reaction, in the earlier stage of prolonged sensitization. In the later stage (over a period of 100 experimental days) there took place exhaustion of the tissue reactions presenting atrophy and fibrosis in each organ. Five out of 7 rabbits showed production of precipitating antibody against the antigen used. In these rabbits there were revealed not infrequently allergic-hyperergic inflammations, i.e., thrombotic necrotizing angitis, endocarditis, aortitis, pneumonitis and diffuse glomerulonephritis. 2) In three rabbits which received administration of a large dose of antigen from the beginning (group II), there were revealed neither production of precipitating antibody in the serum nor induction of allergic-hyperergic inflammations in organs-immunological unresponsiveness - throughout the experimental course. In antibody-forming organs, however, there took place hyperplasia characterized by little proliferation of plasma cells, in other words, an incomplete development of systemic immune reaction. This tissue reaction induced in each antibody-forming organ has also resulted in exhaustion, atrophy and fibrosis, in the later stage of prolonged sensitization.
