1) Bile acid metabolism in acute hepatitis is discussed. Analysis is carried out by the thin layer chromatographic method. Free bile acids are separated on silicagel G with a solvent system consisting of trimethylpentane: ethyl acetate: acetic acid 10:10:2, conjugated bile acid with a solvent system consisting of butanol: acetic acid: water 10:1:1. 2) The ratio of cholic/chenodeoxycholic/deoxycholic acid is 1/0.9/1 in normal human bile. In acute hepatitis, the ratio is 1/0.66/0.08. The ratio of deoxycholic acid is dominantly decreased. In bile-fistula cases, similar result is obtained. So, decrease in the ratio of deoxycholic acid seems to result from diminished amount of entero-hepatic circulating bile acids. In acute hepatitis, bile acid formation is assumed to be decreased. 3) The ratio of glycocholic acid to taurocholic acid is found to be 3.41±1.30 in normal human bile, but in acute hepatitis the ratio is found to be 1.53±0.76. In acute hepatitis, conjugation with glycine may be disturbed.
