1) Sensory impulses from gastric stretch receptors were recorded in single nerve filaments dissected from the cervical vagus of the cat. 2) Impulses from the receptor augmented in frequency corresponding to peristalsis, elicited at the region of the receptor. On the other hand, impulse frequency was closely related to volume of the stomach. From the volume-frequency relation curve, this frequency changed at the rate of about 0.5-2 imp/sec/10 cc. 3) Rapid distension of the stomach produced by a rapid inflow of Ringer's solution caused high frequency discharge. The increase in discharge frequency was related to the speed of the inflow, and independent to the preceeding volume of the stomach. 4) A hysteresis phenomenon in the volume-discharge relationship was clearly demonstrated. 5) It may be assumed then that gastric stretch receptors are stimulated by the change in tension at the localized intermuscular space.
