An experiment was carried out employing rats, on the development of tumor in the bladder by administration of β-naphthylamine, and the effects of Saccharo-1-4-lactone and male hormone on the tumor were investigated. After the animal experiment, a long-term administration of Saccharo-1-4-lactone was made on the patients undergone an operation for tumor of the bladder and the follow-up observation was carried out. When β-naphthylamine was administered subcutaneously to 10 rats and orally to the other 10 rats, papillary proliferation of mucous membrane of the bladder developed in 6 rats in the former group and 4 rats in the latter group respectively. On the other hand, when Saccharo-1-4-lactone was administered together with β-naphthylamine (subcutaneously), no changes took place in the bladder. In the use of male hormone in combination with β-naphthylamine (subcutaneously) to 10 rats, however, papillary elevations were observed in mucous membrane of the bladder in 8 out of the 10 rats. From these observations, it is presumed that the tumor of the bladder developed by β-naphthylamine will be inhibited by Saccharo-1-4-lactone and promoted by male hormone. Along-term administration of Saccharo-1-4-lactone has been carried out to 10 patients who received patial resection or electric coagulation of the bladder tumor. Although the period of follow-up observation is less than two years, no reccurrence of tumor has been observed. It is considered, therefore, that the reccurrence of the bladder tumor can be prevented by the use of Saccharo-1-4-lactone immediately after removal of the tumor.
