A histopathological study of pneumonitis induced in 61 out of 148 rabbits sensitized with egg white, horse serum, egg albumin, and bovine serum albumin for the period from 15 to 515 days is presented. The results here obtained are as follows: 1) The pneumonitis, an inflammatory process of alveolar and ductal tissue including capillaries, surrounding connective (and muscle) tissue, and epithelium as a whole, had a tendency to taking place throughout all pulmonary lobes and lobules with diffuse or patchy distributions. 2) Histopathologically, this experimental disease consisted of a proliferative pneumonitis predominantly characterized by cellular proliferation in the walls of alveoli and alveolar ducts and a degenerative pneumonitis with fibrinoid degeneration and thickening of the walls. In the proliferative pneumonitis seroexudative-sclerosing processes in which structural alteration of the tissue was mild and histolytic-disorganizing-fibrosing processes characterized by transformation of the capillaries and surrounding tissue into enmeshed structure and following repair in the new structural meterial were distinguished. A bud-like projection resembling Masson body in human rheumatic pneumonia was interpreted to be a localized and exaggerated state of the latter inflammatory processes in a limited area of alveolar and ductal walls. Widespread occurrence of sclerosis and fibrosis in lungs resulted in pulmonary lesions resembling those of diffuse interstitial fibrosis in man. 3) Proliferative pneumonitis had a tendency to developing in the earlier and advanced stages of prolonged sensitization, while induction of degenerative pneumonitis was noted only in 3 cases in the later stage. It was remarkable that in one of these 3 cases some evidences suggesting a role of the reaction between anti-lung autoantibody and the own pulmonary tissue in the pathogenesis of degenerative pneumonitis were obtained. The experimental results and suggestions will contribute much to the elucidation of pathology of human pneumonitis.
