Projections of the auditory cerebral cortex and its surrounding belt were studied with the Nauta staining method in twenty eight hemispheres from twenty two cats. The projection fibers from the auditory cortical area are classified into two fiber systems, the specific and the nonspecific. The specific fiber system, which arises solely from the auditory area bounded by the suprasylvian sulci, includes the fibers terminating in the medial geniculate body, the inferior colliculus and its ado joining gray mass (the caudal portion of the middle gray layer of the superior colliculus), and the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus on the ipsilateral side and, in less number, in the inferior colliculus and its adojoining gray mass on the contralateral side. On the other hand, the nonspecific fiber system takes its origin- not only from the auditory area but also from the surrounding belt and consists of the following projection fibers; to the striatal group including the ipsilateral putamen and caudate nucleus; to the lateral nucleus of the ipsilateral amygdaloid nuclear complex ; to the pontile group containing the ipsilateral pontile nuclei and reticular tegmental nucleus; to the ventro-posterior thalamic group comprised of the ipsilateral ventro-posterior thalamic nucleus, the contralateral trigeminal principal sensory, cuneate and gracile nuclei ; to the superior collicular group containing the ipsilateral ventral nucleus of the lateral geniculate body, pulvinar and superficial gray layer of the superior colliculus. As well known, the auditory cortical area is morphologically and electrophysiologically divided into several subdivisions. Among these, A_I area projects all sorts of the projecting fibers belonging to the specific fiber system and A_<II>, A_<III> and Ep_<II> areas give rise to some of them, while Ep_I area and insular region or A_<IV> area do not project any such fibers. The relation between the non-specific fiber system and the subdivisions of the auditory, cortical area is as follows ; the striatal group arises from all subdivisions; the pontile and ventro-posterior thalamic groups from the some subdivisions located in the anterior part of the auditory cerebral cortex ; the amygdaloid group from the some ventral subdivisions ; the superior collicular group from the some caudal subdivisions.
