The mode of action of the germicidal power of sodium fluoride remains unknown. Experiments were carried out to study the action of NaF and CaF_2 on various species of microorganisms. Results show that CaF_2 has no germicidal power, and that it is not until fluorine is ionized by passing the electric current through the medium containing CaF_2 that the chemical acquires germicidal power. This indicates that the germicidal power of NaF depends also on the action of ionized fluorine. It was presumed from changes in biologic properties of the organisms that the action of ionized fluorine to inhibit catalase might be held responsible for destruction of organisms. Changes in the strength of the bacterial membrane caused by action of ionized fluorine might give rise to an unbalance in the energies inside, resulting in inability of the organisms to. maintain their existence. This seems to be the mode of action of NaF against organisms.
