Serum iron was measured in 255 expectant mothers and non-pregnant women (controls) by orthophenanthrolin method to study fluctuations in its concentration during pregnancy. The following obseryations were made : 1. As compared with normal levels, no significant decrease in serum iron values was demonstrated in the former half of the term of gestation. Serum iron concentration was significantly lower in the latter half of the term of gestation, immediately after delivery and on the fifth postpurperal day than in controls. 2. Serum iron concentration in toxemia of pregnancy and other abnormal pregnancy, except in imminent abortion, was significantly lower than control levels. 3. Oral administretion of an iron preparation to expectant mothers with hypoferrism resulted in a rise in serum iron concentration, erythrocyte count and the amount of hemoglobin. 4. The maximum utilization of iron was demonstrated in the ninth month of gestation following administration of an iron preparation to anemic axpectant mothers in the latter half of the term of gestation. Serum iron in gestation was generally lower than control levels. Especially marked wasthe decrease in the latter half of the term of gestation and in abnormal pregnancy. It was shown that oral administration of an iron preparation had an effect in raising serum iron levels. Care should be taken in choosing appropriate time for its administration.
