In order to study the effect of nitrochlorbenzol on the human body, hematologic examinations and liver biopsy, as well as other tests, were performed in 20 chronic and 4 acute cases of anemia due to para- arid ortho-nitrochlorbenzol poisoning. They and factory workers at a certain plant (employees : 30) in Funabashi City. The following observations were mabe : Anemia was of moderate degree, and there was an increase in the number of the reticulocytes. There was no decrease in color index and plasma iron. Bone-marrow picture showed an increase in the number of nucleated cells, especially of the erythrocyfe series, and a decrease in the ratio M/E. Serum indirect bilirubin was increased ; the lifespan os the erythrocyte was shortened ; resistance of the erythrocyte to osmotic pressure was reduced ; and urinary coproporphyrin was increased. The data seem to indicate that anemia in nitrochlorbenzol poisoning is due to hemolysis. It was revealed that, unlike patients with benzol poisoning, the patients under study were free from disturbance of the blood-forming organs, despite the history of their long-standing exposure to nitrochlorbenzol. They only had a slight disturbance of liver function. The acute cases were attended by marked neurotic symptoms. It seemed that the condition was attributed to direct action of nitrochlorbenzol on the nerve system, as well as to hypoxemia.
