Mental changes after Lobotemy (prefrontal lobotomy and orbital lobotomy) were follewed up for 164 patients. The results were analysed and the value of this method as the psychiatric treatment was discussed. 1) The group was composed for the most part of individuals suffering from schizophrenia (134 cases), especially their majority was chronic and protracted. 46 cases (34 %) of the entire group exhibited significant improvement following lobotomy, among them 2 cases (1.4 %) regained perfect social adjustment. 2) Among the types of schizophrenia, results were best in paranoid type than the other. 3) The results were poorer in the deteriorated patients. 4) On the occation of symptom exacerbation, the outbreak was generally within 2 years after the operation. 5) There has been no causal therapy for psychoses, especially for schizophrenia, therefore lobotomy might have some therapeutic utility in the present days. The application of lobotomy is recommended only in the sense of symptomatic treatment, the sense somewhat differs from the case of shock treatment, or pharmacotherapies. 6) The application of this treatment for psychopath or neurotic patients must be carefully decided, paying regard to the lowering of personality level after the operation.
