Studies were carried out to correlate histopathology of the liver with its function in acute viral hepatitis. Liver function tests, such as serum bilirubin, serum bromsulphalein, serum alkaline phosphatase, colloidal tests, serum transaminase, serum iron and serum protein fraction tests were performed in 50 patients admitted to our clinic with incipient symptoms of acute viral, hepatitis. At the same time, embedded and fixed specimens of the liver tissue obtained by biopsy were stained by hematoxylin eosin, van Giesen's and Azin's methods and studied microscopically. The natural history of the disease was divided into the following three stages based on the number of days elapsed since its onset: incipient, advaned and convalescent stages. Results of pathologic examination of the liver and its function tests were correlated in each stage. Some cases were followed with repeated examinations and function tests to study if the disease bacame protracted. The clinical study, pathologic exanination and liver function tests were carried out in patients with cholangiolitic hepatitis which is considered to be an atypical form of hepatitis. Results showed that each stage of acute viral hepatitis was characterized by specific histologic features of the liver, that the disease became protracted in some cases, and that the results of B.S.P., serum transaminase and serum iron tests had a close relaticn with the result of pathologic examination, with the first two tests showing variable values reflecting well the stage of the disease. The results of liver function and biopsy tests were characteristic of the disease.
