The histogenesis of characteristic layered structure in the base of chronic gastroduodenal peptic ulcer is essentially the same with that in the base of cavern or ulcer developing in the area of prolonged Arthus phenomenon in the skin of rabbit. Prof. Okabayashi stated at the 6th Conference of the International Society of Geographical Pathology in Paris 1957, "The induction of chronic gastric peptic ulcer due to prolonged Arthus phenomenon in the gastric wall itself under conditions of bathing in gastric juice in animals is desirable and the chances in succeeding are hopeful." Experimental production of chronic gastric peptic ulcer was carried out in sensitized rabbits and dogs utilizing the principle of the Arthus phenomenon under the following method. After provocative injections of egg albumin or bovine serum into the gastric submucosa in sensitized animals, enteral readministrations of same antigen and prolonged sensitization from the paranasal sinuses were continued. In each 2 cases in respectively over 10 experimental rabbits and dogs there occurred chronic gastric peptic ulcer showing layered structure with demarcating inflammation in the base. It is supported to conclude that prolonged Arthus phenomenon would play an important role in the chronicity or persistence of gastric ulcer.
