In order to investigate the relationship between density of eggs in stools and number of expelled worms, studies were carried out in 15 hospitalized patients positive for Ascaris eggs, as well as in 240 positive and 175 negative school children selected from among a total of 779 elementary school children at a farming community in Nagano Prefecture. Stools were examined by smear method, using 3 to 6 pieces of glass for each stool. Following administration of santonin preparations and piperazine, all the stools evacuated were examined to measure the length of expelled worms and to study intra-uterine eggs for several consecutive days. The relationship between density of eggs and size of expelled worms was followed every day for 5 weeks in 15 hospitalized patients. The following observations were made: The higher the density of eggs in stools, the larger the number of expelled worms. Case of unfertilized eggs alone had a small number of parasite worms. Density of eggs in stools was related to the number of parasite worms and the size of females. Density of eggs may vary case by case even if the same number of females are expelled. Male worms expelled, 38 in number, were 15.26±4.24 cm in length and 1.05±0.63 gm in weight, while female worms expelled, 594 in number, were 22.88±6.69 cm in length and 2.05±2.09 gm in weight. The females that had no eggs in the uterus were less than 9.9 cm in length and 0.49 gm in weight. 46.3 % in persons in whom negative for eggs in stools were found positive of expelled worms. Percentages of persons positive for expelled worms in different groups were as follows: 76.5 % in persons in whom only males were found; 13.6 % in persons in whom only females were found; and 9.9 % in whom both males and females were found. We found that 70.4 of all females were less than 0.4 gm in weight and having no eggs in the uterus. 86.2 of all the worms were expelled within 3 days after administration of a vermifuge. Persons who became negative for eggs required less than 7 days, whom we expelled females.
