1. Injecting urographin as contrast medium into postmortem brain specimens, roentgenograms showing an accurate horizontal view of the cornua occipitale were made in 61 cases consisting of 40 cases free from disorder of the ventricle system and 21 cases of disorder of the ventricle system. Results of roentgenographic studies and pathologic examination of brain specimens were compared with pneumoencephalographic findings obtained when the patients had been alive. 2. The following variability was noted in the cornua occipitale of the normal brain: a. In horizontal view, 24 out of 40 cases, or 40 %, showed dissimilarity in the length of the right and left cornua. Cases with the longer left cornu accounted for 85.5 % of cases with the cornua of different length. b. Cases under study were divided into 4 groups based on differences in form as seen horizontally. Cases with poorly developed cornu accounted for 72.5 % of the total. c. Similarity in the form of the right and left cornua was found in 21 of 40 cases. Similarity in form was more striking than dissimilarity in length. This observation seems to give a true picture of the normal cornua occipitale of the Japanese. 3. Comparison of pathologic findings on brain specimens with pneumoencephalographic findings made when the patients had been alive showed the following results: a. Pneumoencephalographic findings were in keeping with the results of pathologic examination of specimens in the normal brain. However, well-developed calcar avis often showed a pseudotumor contour in pneumoencephalograms. b. The cornu occipitale often showed a well-defined shadow in pneumoencephalogram in cases of dilatation of both ventricles due to stricture or occulusion of the ventricle system. c. Pneumoencephalographic findings were often not in keeping with pathologic findings on brain specimens in cases of dilatation of the ventricle of one side caused by tumor. d. As in the normal brain, encephalographic findings were in keeping with pathologic findings on brain specimens in brain atrophy.
