Twenty-four young rabbits, 14.6 days old on an average, and 2 puppies, 3 days old, were injected with 0.05-0.3 cc. of 10 %-20 % solution of kaolin into the cisterna, and investigation was made of the histopathologic changes in the central nervous system in the animals that survived from 14 hours to 261 days following injections. Hydrocephalis developed in some animals even 24 hours after injections. In about a month after injections, kaolin was noted to be present mostly in the site of injection and the pons medullaris. After that period, however, there was scarcely any trace of it. There was evidence of arachnitis adhaesiva, leptomeningitis and ependymitis in nearly the same area where kaolin was deposited. In the substance of brain and spinal canal adjoining the ependyma involved inflammation, there was incompletely softened lesions and cavities. This observation seems to be important in that it will throw some light on the process of cavitation in syringomyelitis-a mechanism that has not yet been elucidated. At the earlier stages of inflammation, the area involved was mainly infiltrated with polynuclear leukocytes and lymphocytes, but lymphocytes, plasma cells and histiocyte became predominant with time. The appearance of the so-called kaolin cells that had ingested kaolin granules was noted at later stages.
