Statical survey was made on 1,531 patients with hypertension who were seen in our department during the two years from September, 1956 to August, 1958. They were divided into four groups according to the Keith-Wagner's method of classification, and clinical studies were carried out in each group. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The patients with hypertension accounted for 12.1 per cent of all the patients seen in our department during the period under review. There were a little more men than women among them. Of all the patients with hypertension, those belonging to group II were most uumerous, followed by those belonging to groups I, III and IV in the indicated order. 2. The age distribution of the patients with hypertension shows that, in group I an thh group of patients with normal fundus findings, those in the age group 20-40 were most numerous, while in goups II and III, those in the age group 50-60 were most numerous. 3. The patients with inherited tendencies to develop hypertension accounted for 46.5 per cent of all the patients with hypertension. 4. Impairment of visiin was the chief ocular complaint of the largest number of patients with hypertension in all four groups. 5. Generally speaking, both brachial and retinal blood pressure tended to rise with the progress of the disease. 6. Changes in the fundus oculi were as follows: a. Dilatation and zigzagging of the veins were most commonly demonstrated in all the groups. They do not seem, however, to be the characteristic signs that are of significance in Keith-Wagner's classification. b. The patients with arteriolar sclerosis of over 1 plus accounted for 62 per cent of all the cases with hypertension. The longer the duration of hypertension, the severer was the hardening of the arteries. c. Punctate hemorrhage and small hard spots were most commonly demonstrated in the retina in all the groups, followed by edema and cotton wool patches. It was characteristic of this disease that the latter changes appeared only in patients belonging to groups III and IV. 7. There was a close relation between retinal arterial sclerosis and ocular complications, such as retinal central vein thrombosis, retinal central artery thrombosis, intraretinal hemorrhages, hemonhege in the vitreous etc. 8. Disturbance of kidney and liver function tended to occur as the disease progressed.
