Parotid saliva collected by stimulating the parotid gland with subcutaneous injections of pilocarpine was examined in children with nephritis as well as in 35 normal, healthy children ranging in age from 4 to 12. In normal, healthy children, mean saliva flow was 3.6 ± 0.5 cc. before stimulation, and was 14.7 ± 1.4 cc. after stimulation; mean Na concentration was 44 ± 0.3 mEq/L before stimulation, and was 22.9 ± 0.5 mEq/L after stimulation; and mean K concentration was 28.2 ± 1.2 mEq/L before stimulation, and was 17.3 ± 0.8 mEq/L after stimulation. Similar tests carried out in children with nephritis showed that saliva flow and Na concentration tended to be lowered after stimulation than before stimulation.
