For the purpose of determining levels of serum mucoprotein in inflammatory disease and evaluating serum mucoprotein test as a method of clinical test, serum mucoprotein hexose (MH), serum protein-bound total hexose (GH), and serum protein-bound hexose fraction (levels of P. A. S. in paper electophoretically separated protein fractions) were estimated in various inflammatory diseases. The levels of MH paralleled erythrocyte sedimentation rate, levels of protein fractions, leukocyte count, plasma iron levels and plasma copper levels. MH and GH levels were markedly elevated in acute inflammation and active pulmonary tuberculosis, while they were both nearly normal in chronic ineammation and arrested pulmonary tuberculosis. P. A. S. levels in α-globulin fraction, which were raised in acute inflammation and active pulmonary tuberculosis, markedly paralleled MH levels. There was a correlation of significance between MH levels on the one hand and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, α-glubulin fraction levels, leukocyte count, plasma iron levels and plasma copper levels on the other. Determination of MH levels seems to be a method of value in getting the grasp of the dynamic condition of a patient with an inflammatory disease.
