It has been found that, in determining blood flow with radioactive gold (Au^<198>), more accurate results can be obtained by estimating liver uptake rate at the body surface with a wide angle scintillation counter, coupled with estimation of disappearance rate in the blood, rather than merely by means of H. Vetter's method of estimating disappearance rate in the blood. So basic study was first carried out in experimental animals (albino rats and dogs). Then, experiments were carried out using a plaster model of human body as a phantom target, to study the relativity of changes in the conditions of estimation and to ascertain the reproducibility of values based on a specified condition in clinical cases. Using the method described above, liver uptake of gold sol, which the author called blood flow indx (k) representing the liver irrigation fraction of circulating blood volume according to Dobson's theory, was estimated in 151 patients to study changes in its values in different diseases and its chronological fluctuations. This method was shown to be of diagnostic value in liver cirrhosis. It also produced significant results in the diagnosis of decompensated heart failure and splenomegally. Then, the effects of various drugs for stimulating the liver, promoting the secretion of bile, and facilitating the flow of bile from the gallbladder on liver uptake of gold sol were studied. This method was shown to be of value in quantitative determination of the results of treatment for diseases of the liver.
