Serum iron and copper were measured, and intravenous iron loading tests were conducted in various internal diseases to study the aspect of iron and copper metabolism which bears on the construction and destruction of erythrocytes. 1. The diseases in which serum iron levels were lower than normal levels included iron deficiency anemia, hookworm anemia and Band's syndrome, while those in which they were higher than normal levels were aplastic anemia, leukemia, acute hepatitis and hemolytic anemia. In cancer, diseases of the biliary tract and Weil's disease, serum copper levels were elevated, but in no diseases under study were they lowered. The Fe/Cu ratio was characteristic of each disease. 2. Intravenous iron loading tests carried out in various diseases produced the following results: a. Tissue uptake of iron was increased in hypochromic anemia because of iron deficiency, and in hemolytic anemia because of increased hemopoiesis of the bone marrow. b. In aplastic anemia, iron turnover was blocked due to functional disturbance of the bone marrow. c. Uptake of iron in leukemia and Hodgkin's disease partly resembled that in the first group of diseases and partly that in the second group of diseases. d. Iron turnover was nearly normal in diseases of the liver and biliary tract, irrespective of whether serum iron levels were elevated or lowered. 3. There was no particular changes of significance in serum copper levels in diseases under study after intravenous iron loading.
