1. Free choline content of the blood in 16 infants and children with Ekiri was shown to be nearly one half the free choline content of the blood in normal infants and children as well as infants and children with dysentery. 2. Intravenous injection of endotoxin of the bacillus Shigella, isolated from children afflicted with Ekiri, into young male rabbits in doses of from 50 to 100 γ per kg of body weight caused marked decrease in free choline content of the blood in 1 hour after administration. 3. When the endotoxin was given orally to rabbits in a dose of 10 mg per kg of body weight, free choline content of the blood began to decrease in about 3 hours, reaching the lowest levels in 7 hours after administration. This would seem to suggest that the endotoxin may by absorbed through the walls of the intestinal canal also, and has the effects of making the blood free choline levels to fall. 4. Intravenous injection of a small amount of endotoxin (20 γ per kg of body weight) to rabbits, in which the reticulo-endothelial system had been blocked experimentally with throtrast, caused a marked fall in blood free choline levels. Decline in free choline content of the blood in Ekiri appears due to decomposition of choline in the intestinal canal, absorption of the endotoxin of the bacillus Shigella through the walls of the intestinal canal, and disturbance of the reticulo-endothelial system attendant upon infection with the bacillus.
