A survey was made on the mortality, illness and weaning of infants in a certain city, with, a view to contributing to reevaluation of the principles and methods of nourishing infants now widely accepted. The mortality rate for premature babies was shown to be quite high, which emphasizes an urgent need for proper measures to cope with the problem of premature babies from the viewpoint of maternity infant health. The result of survey on illness of babies has shown that diseases of the respiratory organs occupy first place among diseases to which babies are more or less susceptible, followed by those of the digestive organs, and that there is an increased tendency to infectious diseases with age. Among infants under 12 months, there was an increased tendency to various diseases in babies fed on cows' milk, with seasonal fluctuations. Babies fed on cows' milk, with seasonal fluctuations. Babies fed on cows' milk were more predisposed to diseases of both the respiratory and digestive organs than breast fed babies. The author's attention was drawn to the fact that weanlings tended to be more susceptible to diseases, whatever method of nutrition is adopted. There has been considerable popularization of the need for weaning; most babies were weaned at a proper time, though there was a tendency for breast fed babies to be delayed in ceasing to take food by sucking. Weanlings showed slightly inadequate nutrition because. of the baby food which is deficient in both quality and quantity. There seemed to be a tendency in mothers mechanically to cease to suck their babies before the babies could nourish in the ordinary way. In view of the fact that babies weaned at a proper time were nutritionally inferior to those delayed in being weaned, the author suggests that, even after being weaned, dairy products be given to babies as a source of supply of protein and fat.
