The author tried to evaluate Swahn's method, one of the micromethods for determination of serum lipids, and found that it is of great value. So by using this method, total serum lipids were determined in normal, healthy infants and children, as well as infants and children suffering from various diseases. The values obtained are as follows: 301 mg/dl for cord blood; 549 mg/dl for newborn; 542 mg/dl for infant; 488 mg/dl for child; 555 mg/dl for child of school age; 499 mg/dl for premature; 1498 mg/dl for child with nephrosis; and 942 mg/dl for child with hypothyroidism. Total serum lipids were determined before and after administration of cows' milk, oil milk and acid milk (citric acid milk) in the same infants. Total serum lipids increase curves showed that there was the greatest increase in total serum lipids following the administration of oil milk, indicating that fat of oil milk is fit fairly well to be absorbed. Total serum lipids increase curves, which were obtained following administration of cows' milk, cows' added with 10 % sucrose, and cows' milk added with 0.5 % citric acid, showed that absorption of fat was more or less delayed when there was a large quantity of sugar in milk. Balance study was carried out every month in the same infants to investigate fluctuations in fat absorption. The result showed that the fat absorption rate rose with increasing, age.
